The Community Service Learning Community (CSLC) is a one year program for first year full-time students who are planning to live off campus AND have an interest in community service.  This interdisciplinary, non-residential learning community draws on the ideals of service learning, which combine volunteer efforts with academic study.  Students in this learning community will have opportunities to make a difference by volunteering in the local community, form relationships with students living on and off campus, and learn about community and campus resources.  Only 25 students will be selected to participate in the program and will have access to a designated space in Phase VIII Housing for study groups, social events and interaction with resident students.

How to Apply

Who is your Community Service Learning Community coordinator?

Each Learning Community has at least one coordinator to serve as a resource for their students. The Assistant Dean of Students for Volunteer Services & Off-Campus Student Services, Curtis Morgan is the coordinator for the Community Service Learning Community (CSLC).

The coordinator of the CSLC will actively participate in group volunteer and social activities, lead the specialized Freshman Seminar for CSLC members during their Fall semester, instruct the Citizenship & Service course during the Spring semester, and generally advise students in the CSLC on ways to reach out to the community throughout their tenure at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and on career paths that will incorporate community service.

The CSLC is a community of commuter students that is built on the shared principal of giving back to the community.  The CSLC community not only participates in group volunteering throughout the  Charlotte/Mecklenburg area, but they also engage in occasional special events such as soccer and basketball games and dinners.

As well, members of the CSLC will be encouraged to actively engage in the community by completing 20 hours of community service per semester their first year.

Members of the CSLC will also take a few classes together in the Fall and Spring of the first year at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte

Fall Spring

Math Citizenship & Service
Freshman Seminar

During the Fall semester students in the CSLC will take two of their general education requirements together (Math & English) unless placed out into other general education requirement levels (in which case the student will be placed in an appropriate level course with students from other Learning Communities.) As well, during their Fall semester, CSLC students will take Freshman Seminar led by the CSLC coordinator.

During their Spring semester, CSLC students will take two classes together, Global Connections, and Citizenship & Service, which fulfills a W-Goal, instructed by the CSLC coordinator.
