Overview of food recycling program
The Food Recycling Program was the first of its kind in North
Carolina and was founded by a UNC Charlotte student, now a faculty
member here.
This
program is dedicated to outreach and community service through
giving time, and resources to feed those who are less fortunate.
This Program distributes food to the Urban Ministries Center, a
local homeless shelter in Uptown Charlotte. Under the direction of
the van driver, student volunteers will collect food that has been
cooked, but not yet served from several university cafeterias.
Student volunteers are responsible with filling trays of food,
loading the trays into the van, and accompanying the van driver to
the Urban Ministries Center
What you need to do to sign up:
E-mail Katera S. McCorkle at
foodrunrecycling@uncc.edu
or call 704-687-2635 to sign up for a
date.
What you need to do the day of your Food Run:
Please meet in King 207-A, arrive no later than 1:50pm because the
van leaves promptly at 2:00pm and returns between 3:00 pm –
3:15 pm. If you miss the van, you will need to sign up for another
date. Make sure you ‘check in’ with Ms. McCorkle so you get credit
for your time – volunteer names are given to the honors department.
Dress is very casual – keep in mind that you will be handling and
carrying trays of food.
Run Times:
Food Runs are done every Monday and Wednesday during
the academic year. Please note the "Food Run Schedule" is for the Academic Year only starting the first day of
school. There is no food run during the Thanksgiving, Christmas or
Spring breaks. There is no food run if school is not in session.
