    Welcome to S.A.F.E.
    Student Advising for Freshman Excellence

You are now part of the growing tradition of Charlotte 49ers.  For the last 20 years, the SAFE program has welcomed students into this growing tradition; a tradition that grew from students who had a desire to learn, but needed help navigating the system and students who continue to excel because of  the services offered through the SAFE Program.

Your college experience is what you make of it and the SAFE Program is here to assist you find a healthily balance between your academics and social networking on campus.  As the Director of the SAFE Program, my goal is to ensure you feel at home here at UNC Charlotte.  As an educator, I strive to empower students to critically think for themselves, support students in their transition to understand their college experience and to challenge student to take control of their learning. I believe mentoring serves as a great avenue to facilitate the success of students.  With this goal in mind, the SAFE program provides students with a peer mentor throughout their first year of college.  First year students are matched with upper-class students who will serve, not only as a mentor, but as a confidant, and friend.

Through SAFE, you will find many programs, organizations, and people, including the SAFE Counselor, to help make your life at UNC Charlotte rewarding both academically and personally.

I encourage you to take advantage of the many services that UNC Charlotte provides.  We are all committed and dedicated to insure that your life on our campus will be an enriching and successful experience.

Sincerely,

Lorraine Acker
Assistant Dean of Students

"There's a difference between interest and commitment. When you're interested in doing something, you do it only when it's convenient. When you're committed to something, you accept no excuses; only results."

Mentoring 20 years and Counting!

20 years ago, the vision to retain minority students at UNC Charlotte became a reality when academic affairs and students affairs came together to develop the SAFE program.

The SAFE Program works specifically with first year students as they transition from high school to college.  Students are paired with upper classmen who serve as mentors throughout their entire first year at UNC Charlotte.

The success of the program, as the numbers would indicate, remains constant.  SAFE students not only matriculate into their 2nd year of college, but also graduate.  Students who participate in the SAFE program find a home away from home at UNC Charlotte.  Students not only feel a sense of community, but a sense of pride and owner through their SAFE experience.

When the program was founded back in 1987, no one could have predicated its growth. However, over the last 20 years students have been impacted by the services and resources the SAFE program offers.  Mentoring, Academic Support, and Social Networking are the foundations of the SAFE program, which reflect the vision and values of its founders.  These three pillars will continue to be the driving force for another 20 years.
