According to the Constitution of the Student Body of the University of
North Carolina at Charlotte, the powers and responsibility of the Chief Student
Defense include:

To
provide advice to students of their rights and privileges under the University
of North Carolina at Charlotte Code of Student Responsibility and the Code of
Academic Integrity.
n
To advise
any student who requests assistance with his/her defense before Student Court,
and represent any student with his/her defense before the Academic Integrity
Board.
n
To advise or
represent any student who requests assistance with his/her case when the student
is a plaintiff against a division of the Student Association, as prescribed by
law.
n
To assist in
securing the constitutional rights of the students of UNC Charlotte and to
review all public contracts and policies of the University and bring to the
attention of the appropriate administration offers anything considered by the
Chief University Advocate to be in conflict.
n
To petition
a hearing by the Student Court or other channels to determine the compliance of
any questioned documents with this constitution.
n
To serve
subpoenas to any person or persons or information the Chief Student Defense
believes to be necessary and pertinent to the development of a case.
n
To appoint
all assistants, with the approval of the Associate Dean of Judicial Programs.
n
To have
access to such records and files of any division of the Student Government
Association as necessary for the proper execution of the duties of this office
provided student’s rights of confidentiality are not violated.
The
Chief Student Defense is responsible for the general leadership of the Student
Defense Staff. The specific areas
of responsibility of the position are:
LEADERSHIP
n
Orients new
staff members to the Court and their role.
n
Communicates
regularly with staff members through: 1) correspondence regarding meetings,
notices, new procedures, etc., 2) regularly scheduled meetings for which the
Chief prepares an agenda based upon identified issues and concerns in
consultation with the Associate Dean for Judicial Programs, and 3) individual
meetings with staff members to provide feedback, training, and concerns.
ORGANIZATION
n
Schedule
hearing panels for cases in cooperation with the Chief University Advocate and
Hearing Panel Chief at least two (2) weeks in advance.
n
Prepares all
materials necessary for each case.
n
Periodically
sits in on hearing panels to help determine training needs of staff members.
n
Maintains
communication with University Advocate and Hearing Panel offices through regular
meetings.
n
Meets on a
regular basis with the Associate Dean of Student for Judicial Programs.
n
Represents
the Student Court on various committees and Academic Integrity Panel as needed.
ADMINISTRATION
n
Oversees the
maintenance of Court records.
n
Maintains
regular office hours and is available to staff members and Student Government
officers.
